This could be an Amazon Web Services certification, an industry accreditation like CISA or CISSP, or a Google certification, depending on the kinds of roles you’re aiming for.

Physicists can be found in all sorts of places, like labs, colleges, and even as consultants on TV shows. Some become astronauts, while others work for newspapers, magazines, and government offices. Surprisingly, some end up on Wall Street, where their sharp analytical skills are in high demand. Physicists have a knack for looking at problems from different angles and aren’t limited by specific situations because they’re trained to tackle any challenge.

Study options and costs

After finishing high school, students can choose to pursue either an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in Physics. An associate’s degree gives students a basic understanding of Physics and usually leads to further studies for a bachelor’s degree. Throughout the program, students learn about Math, Natural Sciences, and Chemistry. This degree usually takes about two years to complete and might cost up to $57,254.

In a bachelor’s degree, students start by learning the basics of Physics, like how things move and work. Then, they move on to more specific topics like Nuclear Particles, how light behaves (Physical Optics), and Thermodynamics, which is all about heat and energy. This degree usually takes about four years to complete and can cost up to $118,252.

If students really want to dive deep into this field, they can go for a master’s degree. In this program, they’ll study advanced topics like Mechanical Physics, Electrodynamics, Quantum Technology, and Mathematical Physics. It takes about two years to finish and might cost up to $73,100.

After finishing their master’s degree, students can go for a PhD in the field they like. This program includes two years of classes and then a test to show they’re really good at it. During their PhD, students focus on particular areas like Cosmology, Quantum Technology, or Biophysics. The whole degree usually takes 5 to 6 years.

Future Outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects that there will be more job opportunities for physicists in the coming years, with an estimated growth rate of 8% in this decade. Since 2004, the outlook for physicist jobs has been pretty good. Over this time, the number of job openings for physicists has gone up by 14.28% across the country, with an average yearly increase of 0.89%. So, it looks like there will be even more demand for physicists in the future.

Physicists can choose from many different career paths. They might work in scientific research, government agencies, private companies, or universities.

Career pathways for Physics graduates

Quantitative Analyst

Quantitative analysts are experts who use numbers to help businesses make smart choices about their money and operations. They create special formulas for software that figure out when investments will make enough money. These analysts often work with insurance companies, big banks, and other financial firms to manage risks. In the US, they typically earn around $151,716 per year.

Data Scientist

Data scientists are like super detectives for companies. They team up with the people involved in a company to figure out what they want and what they’re aiming for. Then, they dive into data to find ways it can help them reach those goals. Data scientists create special formulas and models to get the exact info that businesses need. In the US, data scientists make around $121,897 each year on average.

Instrumentation Engineers

Instrumentation engineers are the brains behind making sure all sorts of machines and systems work smoothly and safely. They design, create, install, and look after the equipment that keeps everything running smoothly. They make sure everything operates safely and gets the job done well. In the US, instrumentation engineers typically make around $107,881 each year.

Optical Engineer

Optical engineers are like the wizards of light! They create, adjust, and perfect optical systems for things like cameras, telescopes, and lenses. They also work on the electronic parts that make these devices tick. In the US, optical engineers make around $104,106 per year on average.
