About Environmental Science
However, it’s also important to know that some roles within the Computing & IT industry don’t necessarily require a degree. Often a certificate or diploma is enough. For example, less than half of IT support workers actually have a Bachelor’s degree! At the same time, higher levels of education can translate to higher salaries – those with a doctoral degree in computer science earn an average of USD$93,050 in the US while those with Bachelor’s degrees only earn USD$50,820.
Finally, remember that even after obtaining a qualification, you might require certifications or security clearances for certain roles. This could be an Amazon Web Services certification, an industry accreditation like CISA or CISSP, or a Google certification, depending on the kinds of roles you’re aiming for.
Environmental Science is all about studying how different natural and human-made things interact and impact the different environments on Earth. It brings together lots of different fields like Ecology, Biology, Oceanography, and Chemistry. This branch of science got its start during the Enlightenment and early Industrial Revolution from subjects like Natural History and Medicine.
The goal of Environmental Science is to find ways to fix the problems our environment faces. Scientists in this field work hard to understand why things are changing in nature and what we can do about it. They do this by researching, exploring, and making models to figure out solutions.
Is Environmental Science right for me?
If you’re passionate about protecting our planet, diving into Environmental Science might be just right for you. This field gives you a fresh outlook on the world, letting you spot big problems like global warming and pollution. You’ll ponder how human actions affect nature and brainstorm ways to stop harming the environment.
Studying Environmental Science helps you think critically, solve problems, and be creative by looking into tricky environmental problems. You’ll learn about how environmental stuff works and how it’s always changing. Plus, it sets you up for a job that pays well and lets you help the planet.
Studying this field lets you understand the big picture. You might need to travel to different cities or even countries for research and analysis. This gives you a chance to explore different environments and learn how to protect the planet. If you like getting out in the field and doing experiments in the lab to help save the environment, then this could be the perfect fit for you!
Study options and costs
Many universities provide bachelor’s degree programs in Environmental Science. Nearly all respected Liberal Arts colleges offer some version of Environmental Science programs. However, the quality of these programs can differ between institutions. On average, the tuition fee for international students in Environmental Science bachelor’s programs is around $28,132.
Usually, employers in the environmental field prefer candidates with master’s degrees for starting roles, unless someone has lots of work experience. If you have a Master of Science (MS) degree in Environmental Science, you can land good-paying jobs. Just like bachelor’s programs, master’s programs in Environmental Science are popular worldwide. On average, tuition for these programs is around $11,428 for domestic students and $21,207 for international students.
People go into doctoral programs mainly to do their own research. It usually takes 3 to 6 years, depending on the program. Maybe you’ve realized you want to be known as an expert in your field and explore interesting topics. If so, getting a PhD is probably your best bet. People with doctoral degrees often find well-paying jobs in universities and colleges. On average, getting a PhD in Environmental Science costs between $50,000 and $150,000.
Future Outlook
Climate change, endangered species dying out, and forests disappearing are some of the big environmental problems facing the world. These issues affect us a lot, and everyone’s starting to pay more attention to them. In the U.S., environmental scientists make around $73,230 a year on average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And as more money goes towards fixing these problems, their salaries are likely to go up even more.
Around 25% of environmental scientists work in consulting services, while about 34% find employment in state and local governments. Another 9% are in engineering services. There are lots of paths to choose from in Environmental Science, like working in environmental policy or consultancy. With plenty of job options and good pay, Environmental Science is a promising career for lots of people.
Career pathways for Environmental Science graduates

Environmental chemists study soil, air, and water samples to see how clean or polluted they are and how they affect nature. They work to stop harmful stuff from harming humans, plants, and animals. On average, they make around $61,413 per year.
Wildlife Biologist
Wildlife biologists spend most of their time studying animals in their natural homes to understand how humans affect them. They also learn about different animal traits to figure out what species they belong to and even discover new ones. On average, wildlife biologists make about $64,119 per year.
Environment Biologist
Environmental biologists study the environment and how different things affect it. They collect samples from nature to study and figure out ways to protect plants and animals. On average, environmental biologists make about $75,756 per year.
